Its a Dress Up Day!
This Thursday November 14th it’s PJ and Teddy Bear Day! We will have a Spirit Assembly at 8:30am. Please note- do NOT send oversized stuffed animals! If the bear is bigger than the student, it can be distracting/ difficult for some of the activities planned for that day! The Grade 1 Team thanks you in advance for this!
Interviews and Report Cards
By now you should have received your confirmation slip for your Student Led Conference! We’re really looking forward to these, as the students are often so proud of what they have done so far in Grade 1. Report cards will be sent home this Friday November 15th. You can help us save some trees if you send back your envelope, and we’ll use it again in March and June. Here is a breakdown of the report cards, and how they differ from the Kindergarten reports:
The Grade 1 Report card is divided up into sections. The first being Personal Growth, and then into separate subject areas. The grading scheme is different than kindergarten, and is as follows:
4 Excellent achievement of grade level expectations (Wow, I'm doing great here!)
3 Meeting grade level expectations (Exactly where I need to be!)
2 Approaching grade level expectations (We're almost there!)
1 Not meeting grade level expectations (Let's talk and make a plan.)
You’ll notice that the two major areas on the report card are Language Arts and Math strands. Please keep in mind that the expectations in these subject areas change throughout the year.  For example, the reading level goal for November compared to June is different. In Science and Social, we focus on different units throughout all reporting periods.
I think with Grade 1 being such a change from Kindergarten, the first page that focuses on Personal Growth is an extremely important section. It’s quite the step up from half day to full day school, and each and every day we focus on things like the golden rule, how to work together, how to think like a problem solver and be independent. Together we’re helping them develop into responsible students, and they’re going to see success all throughout their time at MMH because of this.

Christmas Concert Information
Our Christmas concert this year will be held at Southminster United Church on December 12 at 6:30pm.  Each MMH family will be given TWO tickets to the concert.  (performing students do not need tickets)  Special exception may be given to families with two households, but a request must be made directly to Mr.Bryant.  We received some exciting news that we will be able to stream the concert live over the internet!  This will enable other family members to be a part of the fun from home as well!

Scholastic Order Forms
December order forms will be coming home this week.  This will be the last order prior to Xmas.  If you would like to place an order as a Christmas gift for your child, please CLEARLY indicate this on the order form and I'll make sure I get it to you secretly.  Thanks so much!

School Book Fair
Our school will be holding a book fair during Student/Parent Conferences this year.  Be sure to stop by the library to check it out while you're here!

Pull Tabs
Keep on bringing in your pull tabs from pop etc.   They are going towards a great cause and will be collected at our next assembly on PJ day!

Winter Clothing
We are getting SO good at keeping track of our things!  Please double check to be sure your child's snow pants are labelled with their name.  Many look the same and we're having a bit of difficulty some days.  Thanks so much!

Home Reading
Please feel free to drop me a line with any comments or questions you have about your child's reading during Home Reading.  Also, please don't forget to take a moment to record the title of the book your child read on that evenings date in the agenda.  It is so helpful to our home reading parents who come in to help.  I can't stress enough how important it is that your child reads to you EACH night.  It is the single, most important thing you can do for your child's progress at school.  Thanks so much for participating!
